Posted by Josh Taylor / May 28, 2018Wheeler K. Neff, the lawyer behind some of the biggest payday loan companies in the country, has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison. He has also been ordered to pay “$50,000 in fines, forfeit more than $350,000, and serve three years’ probation after his release from prison.” This sentence is one of the stiffest punishments dolled out for such a crime, and it foreshadows what might be to come for other industry pioneers.

Posted by Josh Taylor / May 28, 2018Self-driving cars are the promise of the future. We imagine a world without traffic accidents, without traffic, without the stress of driving––we hope for Disneyland’s Autopia. Companies like Uber and Tesla are working on self-driving cars, but it seems like we’re still a long way from fleets of them cruising the streets. This video explains the challenge of building a self-driving car safe enough to trust your life with by getting into the technology a car needs to process all the information possible as it makes decision.
Read MoreThe 2008 housing bubble and the upcoming student loan bubble compared
Posted by Josh Taylor / May 28, 2018The 2008 housing bubble brought the entire worldwide financial system to its knees. Movies like The Big Short explained what happened, but even then it was complicated. This video makes the housing bubble a little easier to understand, and then it goes on to make a terrifying prediction: there will soon be another bubble, and one likely to be far worse than the housing bubble. That bubble will be caused by a combination of skyrocketing college tuitions and student loans.
Read MoreJohn Oliver wonders how Ayn Rand is still a thing
Posted by Josh Taylor / May 27, 2018Author Max Barry once described reading Ayn Rand in this way,” I felt like Ayn Rand cornered me at a party, and three minutes in I found my first objection to what she was saying, but she kept talking without interruption for ten more days.” And yet Ayn Rand, who has been dead for over three decades, still holds sway over modern politicians for her nonsensical and objectively incorrect (see what we did there?) philosophy.

It’s everyone’s worst nightmare––imagine complaining to your boss only to have an audio file of your complaints sent to the boss!
Read MoreWhat rooms in castles were like
Posted by Josh Taylor / May 26, 2018There’s something about medieval castles that capture the imagination. Perhaps because we have all seen movies or TV shows about the medieval period and have seen some pretty glamorous representations of castle living. This video starts with the most basic possible “castle,” which is really just a big ol’ walled room. From there, it builds to what bigger castles looked like from the inside. Don’t get your hope sup, though, because even the biggest or most elaborate castles weren’t that nice.
Read More10 beautiful places that you don’t actually want to visit
Posted by Josh Taylor / May 26, 2018There are so many beautiful places on this planet. Some places, however, have a reputation for beauty that they perhaps do not deserve. Or at least they have reputations that should be carefully considered. Take Varanasi, India, for example. It’s one of India’s holiest cities. Mark Twain once quipped that Varanasi “is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together”. This video examines some of the other places that are a little rougher around the edges than you’d assume.

Read MoreAmazon bans users who return too much
Posted by Josh Taylor / May 25, 2018Amazon’s return police is pretty generous, all things considered. You can return things for free, and sometimes you don’t even have to ship it back. If there’s an Amazon Locker in your area, you can just drop it off. But all that convenience can be dangerous. It gets tempting to return things more and more often. You have to be careful––Amazon recently admitted that it bans users who make too many returns. One user, however, says that they were banned after only six returns in a year––one of which for a product they never even received.
Read More10 fascinating facts about music
Posted by Josh Taylor / May 25, 2018This isn’t your average top ten video, so don’t expect a bunch of click-baity facts. This is a Lemmino video, which means it’s thorough and fascinating. For example, the first fact is about the oldest piece of music ever written down. You even get to hear one of the interpretations of it, but unfortunately it’s very difficult for musicologists to agree on how to translate the musical notations. There is also speculation on why music elicits certain emotions in us.
