A Clockwork Orange and the humanity of violence
Posted by Josh Taylor / February 27, 2018A Clockwork Orange, on the surface, seems to be about a group of ultraviolent kids just doing their ultraviolence. The protagonist––or perhaps anti-hero––seems to be the worst of all of them. But this video argues that the protagonist is actually the most human of all the characters in this dystopian future because he’s the only person who is fully human. Who knows what makes him do what he does and he own its. The other characters are simply mindlessly violent and ignore their own evil.

Read MoreWhy jet engines have that spiral thingy
Posted by Josh Taylor / February 27, 2018Jet engines have a little spiral painted on the center of the turbine. You’ve probably seen them while boarding or from your window seat. They’re not just cool designs, they’re actually an important safety measure. See, the human eye can’t tell how fast a jet engine is spinning, and any other pattern won’t be detectable. A spiral, though, warns people that the jet is spinning and they shouldn’t get close or they’ll be sucked in. Once ground crew can see the spiral shape, they know it’s safe to approach.

Posted by Josh Taylor / February 26, 2018Everyone wants to be a millionaire, but very few people are willing to do the work it takes to become one. And if every few people are willing to do that work, then even fewer are willing to do the work it takes to become a billionaire. What about becoming a trillionaire, then? Forget it, no one is going to do that kind of work. And frankly, since becoming a trillionaire might only be possible through astroid mining, the only people who could realistically do that are Elon Musk and the U.S. government.
Read MoreClimbing the hardest rock climbing route in the world
Posted by Josh Taylor / February 26, 2018You might have visited a rock climbing gym once or twice, maybe as part of a team building day for work or something similar. If you can remember how hard it was to climb some of the more challenging routes in the gym, you might be able to grasp just how intense the route in this video is. If you can’t relate on that account, think about it this way. This route, called “Silence,” is so hard that climbers needed to create a new classification for it. And even if you’re not interested in climbing at all, this is still a beautiful video.
Read MoreA new test for brain damage limits radiation risk
Posted by Josh Taylor / February 26, 2018If you, God forbid, get into a car accident and knock your head, then you might have to go to the hospital to get a scan for brain damage. But it’s not as simple as that, unfortunately. Brain scans expose patients to tons of radiation, and sometimes the risk of that scan outweighs the risk of concussion. In short, if you’re going to get a brain scan you need to run some risk calculations. But what if there were another way? A new blood test offers a safer means of testing for brain damage by looking for proteins in the blood.

Posted by Josh Taylor / February 25, 2018Your smartphone might make you feel as though you have an addictive personality because you just can’t put it down. Don’t worry, though, you’re not the only one to feel addicted to a phone––smartphones are actually designed to be addictive. Apps send you notifications to mimic personal interactions, and that tricks you into feeling like you’re getting some real connection. That connection is, of course, fake, but your brain thinks it’s real. There are some ways you can fight it, though. Take a look and learn how.

Tashi Mannox is, first and foremost, a pretty funny guy. He jokes about sitting in meditation and being unable to stop himself from looking at the decorations around the room. Learn more about him in this video and see some of his incredible art projects. You’re going to get a little enlightened just by watching.

Posted by Josh Taylor / February 25, 2018No matter how fearless you are, you’re probably going to white-knuckle your way through this video. Watch an F-18 pilot land his jet on an aircraft carrier in choppy seas here. Some things to watch for: watch how he engages the throttle (with his left hand) right as he starts to hit the flight deck. He does that just in case the landing goes south and he has to take off again. Fortunately that doesn’t happen in this vid.

Posted by Josh Taylor / February 24, 2018Have you ever thought that pregnancy might be like growing a tiny alien inside of you? Be honest––everyone has had that thought once or twice. This video shows that you’re not crazy or inappropriate. There are lots of reasons that pregnancy is like growing an alien inside your human body. Just watch this video and learn about the placenta, for example. That whole system is super weird––and believe it or not people actually eat that sucker.

Posted by Josh Taylor / February 24, 2018First of all, if you’re looking for a thirteen-minute bashing session about President Trump, you’re barking up the wrong tree. This video doesn’t include the current president because it’s unfair to judge a sitting president until you have some perspective to judge his legacy. Instead, you’re going to learn a bit of history. For example, Andrew Johnson was the worst. The whole Reconstruction catastrophe that you don’t remember from high school? Johnson’s fault.

Posted by Josh Taylor / February 24, 2018The new iPhone comes with wireless charming, which is pretty awesome, right? It might have some cool razzle dazzle, but as it turns out wireless charging is pretty awful for the environment. Here’s the problem: wireless charging is incredibly inefficient. The amount of electricity one wireless phone wastes could power an entire home for a year. A year! Then think about how much power a car would waste, or a family with both a car and a few phones.
